If you’re like most people, your fireplace mantel is one of those… well, awkward spaces.
You can’t overdo it, because it’ll appear cluttered and messy—but if you under-do it, it looks stark and plain.
So what’s a homeowner to do?
The Right Way to Use Décor on Your Mantel
“When someone’s trying to design their mantel, they think it needs to be symmetrical. I think it’s not actually that it needs to be symmetrical, but you’re looking for some kind of balance,” says design pro Victoria Hagan.
You definitely need something there, but when you’re selecting the main focal point, you don’t need to relate anything to the shape or length of the mantel.
“You just have to trust your eye,” says Hagan, “because it really tells you.” She suggests adding the unexpected, such as a vase on one side that throws off the balance of symmetry.
Hagan also says that when you’re creating a design on your mantel, “Less is typically more.” Creating a narrative can be exceptionally beautiful, especially when you use something unexpected.
“When I’m designing a mantel, I think of it almost like a collage. You place one piece, stand back, look at it, and see what it needs. It’s all about finding the right balance of items… There are relationships that might not be obvious,” Hagen says, and adds that the color of one piece of décor can complement the color of another. Shapes relate to each other, as well, so two similar items can really stand out among what would ordinarily look like unrelated items.
You can always shop our collection of unusual and unique gifts to find the perfect accents for your fall-inspired mantel, too.
White pumpkins stenciled with letters are a great way to go for fall decor, but don’t limit yourself. There are dozens of amazing ideas out there, and you can customize each to create your own unique display.
If you’re going to change the mantel throughout the year, you don’t have to go all-out.
“I often like to change the mantel throughout the year—just maybe one or two pieces, because it gives a different feeling; I might add some evergreens, and it really adds a different feeling,” Hagan says. She also suggests using mirrors, which can add personality to nearly any décor.
