Age-old decorating wisdom tells us that mirrors can really open up a space and make it appear larger—but that wisdom is only effective if you place your mirrors properly.
So what is the ideal layout if you’re adding mirrors to your home?
Feng-shui aside, there’s a right way (and a wrong way) to place mirrors as decorative elements.
The Ideal Mirror Placement: It’s More Than Personal Preference
While your personal design style will have a major impact on where and how you accessorize with mirrors, you want them to improve your space rather than making it appear cluttered or poorly decorated.
It’s usually best to let mirrors reflect natural light—particularly when you place them across from windows. “One, it reflects the outdoors, which makes the room appear much bigger. And two, it reflects the natural light that the window is letting in, flooding the space with even more sunshine than is shining in from a window,” says design pro Lindsay Smith.
More Mirror Decorating Tips
Big mirrors are a great option, but they’re not right for everyone’s style. Smith suggests finding a floor-length mirror and placing it on one wall, using it as a focal point in a room.
“One of the only real rules there are when decorating with mirrors is to be aware of its placement—keep in mind what it will be reflecting,” says Smith. The last thing you want when you’re hanging a mirror is to have the wrong image bounce back, such as the interior of your bathroom when you’re sitting at the dining table. “Make sure it’s reflecting a window, a wall, a piece of art, or something else you’ll enjoy looking at,” Smith says.
If you love the idea of decorating with mirrors but feel a large one will be overwhelming (or too expensive) in your space, try arranging several small mirrors into a gallery wall.
